CARY, N.C. – The NC State men's tennis team opened its fall season Friday as four members of the squad competed at the Duke James Bonk Invite at Cary Tennis Park. Georgiy Malyshev, Michael Ogden, Igor Saveljic, and Ivan Saveljic each played two doubles matches and one singles match on the first day of the tournament and will continue competition for the remainder of the weekend.
HIGHLIGHTS:
The Wolfpack opened the day by winning both of its doubles matches in the first round. Ogden and Malyshev defeated VCU's Arvid Noren and Javier Amantegui, and Igor and Ivan took down Brandon Lancaster and George Hedley of Louisville on the adjacent court.
In the second round, Igor and Ivan faced Simon Soendergaard and Josh Peck of UNC-Chapel Hill. The Tar Heel duo is ranked No. 59 in the ITA preseason rankings and was the top seed in the A2 doubles bracket. The match extended into a tiebreaker, which Igor and Ivan handily won 7-3 to give them the match. The victory moved the pair into the final of the A2 draw.
Igor carried momentum from doubles into singles play, where he faced Louisville's Clement Filho. The Wolfpack junior used strong service games to his advantage, winning 6-3, 6-4.
Malyshev also put together an impressive singles performance for the Wolfpack. He drew a familiar opponent in Catalin Mateas of Duke. Malyshev matched up against Mateas twice last fall and fell to the Blue Devil in straight sets each time. Things were different this outing. Malyshev battled through a competitive first set, which Mateas took 6-4, and stormed back to win the second set 7-5 to force a deciding third set. He took control in the final set, capping his performance off with a match-winning ace to close out the set 6-3.
UP NEXT:
The tournament resumes Saturday morning with doubles matches scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Igor and Ivan will play Duke's Ryan Dickerson and Spencer Furman in the final of the A2 draw, while Ogden and Malyshev will close out doubles competition against another Duke duo of Sean Sculley and Nick Stachowiak.
The first singles matches will start immediately after (not before 10 a.m.), with the second singles matches played in the afternoon (not before 2 p.m.).
