CARY, N.C. – After Tuesday's rain delayed play at the Atlantic Tire Championships, Alexis Galarneau began competition at the ATP Challenger event Wednesday afternoon. The doubles match with Galarneau and Michael Ogden has been postponed to Thursday.
In singles play, Galarneau matched up against Julian Zlobinsky in the first round after earning a wild card into the main draw. Zlobinsky, a redshirt junior at Wake Forest, advanced out of the qualifying round during the opening weekend of the tournament to reach main draw play.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle, with each player holding serve during the early games. Zlobinsky gained an advantage when he broke Galarneau's serve to take a 4-3 lead, and he ended up taking the first set 6-4.
In the second set, Galarneau faced an early two-game deficit. Zlobinsky led 5-4 with a chance to serve for the match, but Galarneau fought his way to a timely break to tie the score at 5-5. The Wolfpack sophomore dialed in from there, holding his serve and earning another break to take the second set 7-5 and force a deciding third set.
Galarneau jumped out to a quick lead in the final set, but Zlobinsky fought back with the help of two breaks. Zlobinsky took the third set 7-5.
