Wolfpack duo tabbed preseason all-conference
GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State volleyball's Bree Bailey and Julia Brown have been named to the 2017 Preseason All-ACC Team, announced Friday by the league office. The conference's predicted order of finish was also released and the Wolfpack was tabbed fifth among the league's 15 teams.
Brown is coming off a stellar junior season in which she was an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-East Region Team selection and a First Team All-ACC honoree. She broke the rally-scoring era program record for most kills in a single season with 489 kills, third most in the ACC and 34th in the NCAA.
Additionally, the Davidson, N.C., native set the rally-scoring era program record for most kills in a match with 31 in a five-set win against Syracuse. Brown logged double-digit kills in 27 of the team's 32 matches and charted 10 or more digs on 17 occasions to tally 16 double-doubles.
Bailey will make her debut in an NC State uniform this fall, after playing her first three seasons at Arizona State before transferring into the Wolfpack program. As a junior with the Sun Devils, Bailey was a 2015 Pacific 12 (PAC-12) All-Conference Honorable Mention selection after finishing the season with 288 kills, the second most on the squad. The 6'4" outside hitter also produced the third-most points (344.5) and blocks (94) on the Sun Devils team.
The Salt Lake City, Utah, native played in all 32 of ASU's matches last season, notching a season-high 18 kills against top-ranked USC. Bailey is the daughter of former NC State men's basketball standout Thurl Bailey, member of the 1983 National Championship Team.
The preseason All-ACC honors are the first for Bailey and Brown. It also marks the first time since 2014 that the Pack has had someone listed to the team, as Dariyan Hopper claimed the mention that season.
Following a strong 2016 season in which NC State ended the year in a tie for sixth place with a program record 13 ACC wins, the Wolfpack was picked to finish fifth by the league's head coaches. The Pack returns its top-five point scorers from last season and is the only team in the conference to do so.
Head Coach Linda Hampton-Keith and her staff led the squad to the program's first top-10 victory with a win at 10th-ranked Florida State and the 2016 Wolfpack finished the year listed at No. 64 in the RPI, a jump of nearly 100 spots from the 2015 season.
The Pack kicks off its 2017 campaign against national powerhouse Kansas at home on Aug. 25. First serve is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Reynolds Coliseum. NC State will host its annual red/white intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. inside Reynolds. Admission is free to the scrimmage.
