RALEIGH, N.C. – Headlined by head coach Braden Holloway, the NC State men's & women's swimming & diving team will be strongly represented at the World University Games, being held in Taipei, Taiwan from August 19-30.
Holloway will be an NC State representative on the coaching staff, and those accompanying him include senior Ryan Held, a 2016 Olympic Games gold medalist in the 4x100-meter relay, who will be competing in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events.
Along with his gold medal from the 2016 Olympics, Held has had a storied career with the Pack and was highly influential in helping the squad achieve a fourth-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Championships. He was a 2017 NCAA Champion in the 800-yard freestyle relay, while also earning All-America Honors in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 200, 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays, and the 200-yard medley relay.
Held will be accompanied by junior Justin Ress, who will be aiming to win gold in the 50 and 100-meter backstroke.
Fresh off an appearance at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Ress has also had a stellar career at NC State thus far, as he was a 2017 NCAA Champion in the 800-yard freestyle relay, while also earning 2017 All-America Honors in the 200, 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays, the 200 and 400-yard medley relays, and the 100-yard freestyle.
Kayla Brumbaum, who recently completed her final year of eligibility with the Pack, is competing in the 200-meter breaststroke. She played a crucial role in helping NC State achieve a program-best finish of seventh place finish at the 2017 NCAA Championships, earning All-America Honors in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events, while also being honored as an All-American in the 200 and 400-yard medley relays
Accompanying Holloway, Held, Ress and Brumbaum will be senior Hannah Moore, who will be competing in the 800 and 1500-yard freestyle. Along with Brumbaum, Moore was a key contributor to NC State's program-best finish at the 2017 NCAA Championships, as she earned All-America Honors in the 500 and 1650-yard freestyle. Moore was also on the cusp of Olympic team selection in 2016, when she was a finalist at the trials in the 400 and 800-meter freestyle.
Moore is thrilled to not only be representing her country, but to be doing so with several of her Wolfpack teammates.
"I feel like it's been forever since we qualified for the team because everyone else was on a different schedule, so it's been just us for a while," she said. "Kayla and I are really looking forward to leaving because it seems like we've been alone for a while, but it's been really good getting more one-on-one time with the coaches because they can pay more attention to us and help us work on the fine details before the meet. I'm really excited there's going to be a Wolfpack contingent going to Taiwan, because none of us will be alone and we'll have each other to lean on and support. Team USA will really care about each other, but having more NC State swimmers there is extra support. Having Braden over there will also be really good, he knows what I do every day and can help me prepare for my races."
While teammates at NC State, Alexia Zevnik, who just completed her final year of eligibility with the Pack, and sophomore Mackenzie Glover will also be attending the games, but are representing Canada. Zevnik is competing in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke, as well as the 100 freestyle. Glover is competing in the 50 and 200 backstroke.
Along with Brumbaum and Moore, Zevnik and Glover played significant roles in NC State's program best campaign in 2016-17. Zevnik earned 2017 All-America Honors in the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 200 individual medley, 400 freestyle relay, and 400 medley relay. She was also named 2017 ACC Most Valuable Swimmer. Glover was an NCAA Qualifier in the 100 and 200 backstroke, and holds marks in three events on NC State's top-10 all-time list.
