NC State collects team GPA of 3.413 for the 2016-17 academic year
LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the second consecutive year, the NC State volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, announced Monday by the organization.
Â
"I'm extremely proud of our team for their hard work in the classroom," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "This recognition by the AVCA is an honor to each of our athletes and the work they put in to be great every day. They're the epitome of what it means to be student-athletes."
Â
The award, which began during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.Â
Â
Celebrating its 25th year, the AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered in terms of the quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every year but two, while amassing a 532 team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 822, which breaks the record for most teams to earn the award in an academic year.
Â
Wolfpack volleyball student-athletes combined to record a team GPA of 3.413 for the 2016-17 academic year. Eleven players achieved a 3.0 or better during the spring semester, highlighted by senior Erin Chatman with a perfect 4.0.
 Â
NC State is one of five schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to garner the mention, along with Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. In total, 145 division I programs received the honor.
Â
The Pack kicks off its 2017 campaign against national powerhouse Kansas at home on Aug. 25. First serve is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside Reynolds Coliseum. NC State will host its annual red/white intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. inside Reynolds. Admission is free to the scrimmage.
