Describe the trip to Italy.
"The trip to Italy was awesome because it encompassed so many different aspects of learning and everything else that you could think of for an international trip. We got to experience a different culture, which made us much more humble. We had a lot of team bonding and it made us much closer before the fall season even starts. Many teams don't get their freshmen to campus so early and we were able to, so that's a big step that we've already taken before the season starts.
"We grew a lot together and it was so much more than just training or just playing matches. We had the opportunity to take in the experience and there aren't many opportunities for teams to travel to Italy and we were able to do that. Overall, it was a great learning experience and very humbling trip for us all."
What was the best part of the trip?
"I have two. After our first match, we had dinner with the team that we played and it was a fantastic atmosphere and it was almost as if we had known them for many years with how our conversations were going.
"Another great moment was when we traveled to one of the smaller towns (I forgot the name) on the last day before we left. There weren't a lot of tourists and the town kind of reminded me of home (Carrboro). Some of the other cities we visited were very touristy, so it was nice to see one of the smaller towns and be a part of their culture."
Had you ever been to Italy before?
"No, I had never been to Europe before the trip."
How excited were you when you found out that you would be going to Italy the summer before your senior season?
"Everything happened so fast, that I didn't really have time to process it all. I don't think it actually set in that we were in Italy until we landed and even then it just seemed surreal. Even after getting our Passports and gear for the trip, it still didn't seem real. It's so cool and I'm very grateful to have this opportunity before my last season."
Other than the Italy trip, have you taken any other vacations or do you have any planned?
"I went to California for a few days after the fall semester, but I've been in classes since summer session I so there really isn't too much more vacation time for me. I'm in a few classes now, but after the semester is over I'm going to take a long break from school and then get ready to do some great work this fall."
Back to volleyball, how does it feel to be a senior?
"I'm still hanging on to the junior summer (haha). It's interesting because I don't necessarily feel like a senior yet. I've taken on a lot more responsibility than in past years to make sure that we have the right culture to move our team forward."
How excited are you to start the season?
"It's a bittersweet feeling because I know it's my last one. I'm super pumped because I know we're going to do some great things this year and it has the potential to be one of the best seasons since I've been here. Last year was great and I know that we have so much to build on heading into this season."
What are your goals for the team and individually this year?
"Our goal is to make the NCAA Tournament. We're trying to get to the tournament for the first time since we've been here and this team is really driven to make that a reality. I think we tasted some success last year and we know what we need to do in order to be successful this year.
"Another goal off the court is for us all to be really good teammates for each other. Individually, I'm just trying to contribute everything that I can to this team. We have an immense amount of talent and I think it will force everyone to be at their best to make our team better."
Was there anything in particular that you wanted to work on this summer for the season?
"I've been working on pretty much every aspect of my game. I've been working on my footwork getting to the ball when I'm hitting, lining up on the block better and pressing in, seeing the hitter when blocking, my serving, passing and becoming a much more vocal player. I want to get better in each of these areas everyday."
What do you want to do after graduation?
"I recently switched my major to political science and I want to go to law school after graduation. I love learning about politics and our history and where we're going."
