The match was a battle from the start, as the Wolfpack dropped the doubles point to give Oregon a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. The score was tied at 1-1 and 2-2 before the Wolfpack ran away with the match, earning two straight points to clinch the win. NC State showed true grit after dropping five of six first sets and then rebounding to win five of six second sets. Additionally, three of the Wolfpack's points were won in three-setters.
This marks just the third time in program history that the team has advanced beyond the Round of 64.
Simon Says
"We knew coming in today that Oregon was going to be a feisty team," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "A lot of people have told us that they're loud, and Allison has done a great job there. They've had some landmark victories for their program this year and we knew it was going to be a fight, and that's exactly the way the match turned out.
"Getting the doubles point has been a key to our success all year, and we weren't able to get that today. We did the business as usual at No. 1, but we lost that deuce point at No. 2 and that cost us the match.
"Once again we were a little bit sluggish today, but I think the difference maker was the four girls that played in the tournament last year. They were able to be a little more comfortable in those second sets despite having lost five of the first sets. I thought our energy and demeanor was fantastic today. We never gave up hope and were able to gain a little bit of momentum in the second sets and that then continued into the third sets and the girls really fought like champions.
"I really can't speak highly enough about how proud I am of all of them. Overall, it was a great victory for the girls and I'm looking forward to playing tomorrow. Go Pack!"
