Midfielder brings Premier League 2 experience with West Bromwich Albion to Raleigh
April 7, 2017
RALEIGH – The NC State men's soccer team has added Brad Sweeney to its roster in advance of the 2017 season, head coach George Kiefer announced Friday.
"The staff is really excited about Brad joining us at NC State," Kiefer said. "Coach (Jeff) Negalha is very thorough when he recruits and he compares him to some of the better players that play centrally in the ACC. We anticipate Brad will bring a calming influence to the group while in possession of the ball and he has the ability to play well in tight spaces in addition to opening up the game for us with longer range passing."
A midfielder from England, Sweeney joins the Wolfpack from West Bromwich Albion's second team, which currently plays in the Premier League 2. Sweeney has been a part of the West Brom youth system for more than a decade and played an important role in the club's 2016-17 campaign.
Brad Sweeney Bio
Prior to NC State: Played for West Bromwich Albion youth teams from 2004-17 under the direction of coaches Aaron Danks and James Shan … Made 14 starts and 16 appearances for West Brom 2 during the 2016-17 season, which included matches in both the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy competition … Was team captain of the West Brom youth clubs from U12 to U16, then again at U18 … Reached the final of the U15 Premier League tournament … Reached the semifinal of the U16 Premier League tournament … Reached the semifinal of the Nike Cup before falling to Chelsea.
Personal: Chose NC State because of the ambition of the coaching staff and he feels that he can be a part of something big while also enhancing his footballing ability … Favorite book is Win or Learn … Favorite TV show is Stranger Things … Outside of soccer, enjoys playing tennis and golf, and watching boxing and MMA … Nicknamed "Sween" or "Sweeney."
