Junior Brian Brown fans a season-high 11 batters in game one
CHESNUT HILL, Mass. – The NC State baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games against the Boston College Eagles Sunday afternoon at Shea Field. The Wolfpack was edged in game one, 2-1, and came up short in the second game of the twin bill, 1-0.
Runs were at a premium in both games thanks to strong starting pitching, as each team's starter lasted until at least the sixth inning in both games.Â
NC State's Brian Brown turned in a standout performance on the mound for the Wolfpack in game one, as he struck out a season-high 11 batters in 6.2 innings of work. He fanned four consecutive batters on two occasions in the contest to record the second-most strikeouts in his collegiate career, just two shy of his career-high 13 against Notre Dame last season.
He allowed one earned run, which came early in the game on a safety squeeze play by Boston College (15-22, 6-15 ACC) as they grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Wolfpack (20-20, 8-12 ACC) knotted the score at one in the top of the fifth after Evan Mendoza led off the inning with a double to left center, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Andy Cosgrove.
Boston College took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth after Gian Martellini doubled down the left field, just inside the third base line on a ground ball, which allowed the baserunner to score from second.
Dan Metzdorf earned the win for BC with eight innings pitched and Donovan Casey notched his fourth save.
In game two, freshman Michael Bienlien gave NC State a strong outing by pitching six innings and had not allowed a run when he left the game in the seventh. He struck out three, walked two and gave up five hits.
His counterpart, Brian Rapp of Boston College was stellar and he went the distance on the mound to record the win with a shutout. He fanned six batters, allowed three hits and walked two.
NC State hit a couple balls hard in the contest, but it was always right at a Boston College fielder. The Eagles scored the game's lone run after a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth to earn a 1-0 victory.
The Wolfpack returns to action Tuesday evening when it hosts North Carolina Central at 6 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park.Â
