RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State Athletics Office of Student-Athlete Enhancement and Leadership partnered with Duke Energy for the third consecutive year to sponsor Wolfpack Blitz, which helps to emphasize the importance of reading at a young age by providing resources and role-model interaction.
Several NC State student athletes along with Duke Energy's vice-president Local Government and Community Relations, Mike Hughes, traveled to Lynn Road Elementary School to read books to second grade classes.
"We were privileged to read to young students who, in the blink of an eye, will be leading our businesses, institutions and government. Our future workforce starts with the reading skills elementary students are building today," said Mike Hughes, Duke Energy's vice-president Local Government and Community Relations. "We're proud to partner with NC State, and it's great to see student athletes encouraging young children to start reaching for their dreams by applying themselves in school."
Following the reading session, Hughes and the student athletes held a forum to answer questions about school, the important of reading, athletics, and personal life. Each student received a book at the end of the session and Duke Energy donated an additional $500 to Lynn Elementary.
In total, over 50 NC State student athletes from 13 teams will participate in Wolfpack Blitz to emphasize the importance of reading. By the end of the week, the athletes will have visited 12 Wake County schools with a focus on kindergarten through second grade students, reaching an estimated 1,500 students.
