Pack Splits Pair Of Games On First Day Of Mary Nutter Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The NC State softball team split its pair of games on Thursday on the first day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, Calif.
The Wolfpack defeated New Mexico State 7-4 in game one and fell 8-3 to No. 6/4 UCLA in the second. NC State moves to 3-8 on the season while the Aggies are 4-6 and the Bruins are 12-1 after today's competition.
Game Rewind vs. New Mexico State
-The Pack scored all seven of its runs in the first. Tyler Ross led off the inning with a double down the left side, which was followed by a single to second base by Jade Caraway and a walk by Molly Hutchison to load the bases. The Pack attempted to score two at-bats later but a fielder's choice to home plate kept NC State scoreless.
-The runs started pouring in after Jessica Moore drew a walk with the bases loaded, Alyssa Compton and Natalie Jones hit back-to-back RBI singles to left field and Macauley Prickett singled to third base to put four runs on the board.
-At the top of the lineup Ross drew a walk with the bases loaded once again, and Caraway hit a 2-RBI single up the middle to plate two more runs.
-NM State scored one run apiece in the fourth and sixth innings. The first was tallied after Kennedy Johnson singled up the right side to allow the runner on first to make it home. In the sixth NM State hit three straight singles to load the bases, and Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 7-2.
-NC State attempted to score in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, putting two on base in both frames.
-The Aggies tried to rally in the seventh, scoring two runs after Haley Nakamura led off the inning with a single to left field and Amy Bergeson homered inside the park. With two outs on the board Prickett made a diving catch in right field to end the game.
Game Rewind vs. UCLA
-UCLA struck first with a three-run homer by Brianna Tautalafuta in the bottom of the second. A single to the left side and double down the right field line put runners on second and third.
-Ross plated NC State's first run in the third inning. She reached on a fielder's choice to second base and scored on a triple by Caraway up the right center - her second of the season.
-The Bruins scored three more in the bottom of the third. A leadoff double to the left center followed by a bunt single to the pitcher put runners on second and third, which was followed by an RBI single down the left side by Bubba Nickles. Jacqui Prober then singled up the right side to allow two more runners to cross the plate and extend the Bruins' lead to five.
-NC State earned its second run in the top of the fifth. Caraway started the scoring play by tallying her third hit of the day with a single to the left side and advancing to second on a passed ball. Moore hit an RBI single to center field to bring Caraway home.
-UCLA answered in the bottom of the inning with a 2-RBI double by Gabrielle Maurice with the bases loaded.
-The Pack tried to rally in the seventh as Ross and Caraway led off with base hits and Cheyenne Balzer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Moore hit an RBI-single to the shortstop to bring Ross across the plate for the second time and make the score 8-3.

NC State will continue competition at the Mary Nutter Classic Friday with two more games. The Pack will face 2016 World Series Champion No. 4/5 Oklahoma at 6 PM ET and RV/RV Oregon State at 8 PM ET.
