No. 9 Rifle Set for 2017 GARC Championships

Wolfpack travels to Akron for conference championships
RALEIGH, N.C. – The ninth-ranked NC State rifle team will head to Akron, Ohio, this weekend for the 2017 Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships. University of Akron will host the event Feb. 24-25 at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Field House.

Admission for the championships is FREE.

The smallbore portion of the event is slated to get underway at 8 a.m. Friday, while the first relay of air rifle will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. Smallbore finals will be held at 3:45 p.m. Friday, while air rifle finals commence at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

This year marks the first season that Akron has hosted the event, as Ole Miss served as the host in each of the previous 11 years.

NC State will be joined at the championships by second-ranked West Virginia, No. 6 Kentucky, No. 8 Nebraska, No. 11 Memphis, No. 12 Army, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 15 Navy and the host Zips are ranked No. 16.

In its most recent outing, NC State logged its third-best score in program history with a mark of 4670 at the NCAA Qualifier Match hosted by The Citadel.

Last season, the Wolfpack finished third at the championships, its highest finish since joining the league in 2007. NC State fired a team score of 4651, highlighted by a score of 2360 in air rifle, a program best at the time.

The 2017 squad will be looking for a similarly strong performance at the conference championships.

On Wednesday, the Wolfpack's Caitlyn Ford and Lucas Kozeniesky were selected to compete in the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championships as individuals in the air rifle event.
