Pack’s junior upset #5 Zavatsky of Virginia Tech in dual
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State redshirt junior Michael Macchiavello was named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Wrestler of the Week Tuesday after recording a top-five win this past weekend.
Macchiavello, from Monroe, North Carolina, and wrestling at 184 pounds, upset fifth-ranked Zack Zavatsky of Virginia Tech, with a 9-3 decision in their dual match last Saturday.
Entering the third down 2-1, Macchiavello got a reversal and then a four-point nearfall before adding a late takedown in the 9-3 win. Macchiavello finishes a perfect 4-0 in ACC duals at 184 pounds, and improves to 5-4 versus ranked foes downing his highest ranked opponent of the season.
Macchiavello, ranked 11th nationally by InterMat and 10th by the NCAA Coaches panel, handed Zavatsky only his second defeat of the year. Previously, Zavatsky had lost only to Cornell's Gabe Dean, a two-time national champion and top-ranked wrestler nationally in the weight class.
No. 7 NC State returns to action this weekend, as the Wolfpack was selected to host #16 Michigan in the NWCA National Duals Championship Series. The dual will take place Friday night at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. Tickets are $7 adults and $5 youth, and are available HERE.
