Six Rushing Scores Lead Pack to 52-31 Win in 2017 Hyundai Sun Bowl

EL PASO, TEXAS – Behind six rushing touchdowns, NC State scored its second-highest point total in its 31 all-time bowls, as the Wolfpack defeated Arizona State 52-31 in the 2017 Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas Friday afternoon.

RB Nyheim Hines had three first half rushing scores, while fellow RB Reggie Gallaspy II added two in the second to go along with Jaylen Samuels' TD rush in the fourth quarter.

NC State scored first and never lost the lead. Hines' capped off back-to-back drives with his first two rushing scores as NC State led 14-0 less then a minute into the second quarter.

ASU's 24-yard field goal was answered by another Hines TD rush to make it 21-3. The two teams traded TDs in the final two minutes of the first half as the Pack led 28-10 at the half.

Kyle Bambard's 26-yard field goal that pushed the score to 31-10 was the lone scoring in the third quarter.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Gallaspy scored from 23 yards out, but Arizona State scored back-to-back TDs to cut the lead to 38-24 with 8:53 left.

A two-yard Jaylen Samuels TD rush put the Pack back up 45-24 with 4:06 to play. ASU answered to cut it to 45-31 with 2:03 left, but Gallaspy added his second of the day to conclude the scoring.

Hines was named the Most Valuable Player, Kentavius Street was the Most Valuable Lineman, and Kyle Bambard was the Most Valuable Special Teams Player.

NC State opened the scoring late in the first quarter, as the Pack drove 87 yards in 15 plays to take a 7-0 lead. RB Nyheim Hines capped the drive with a 5-yard TD run, he had 24 yards rushing on the drive.

After Jarius Morehead picked off an ASU pass in the end zone, NC State went 80 yards in 12 plays in 7:14 to extend its lead to 38-10 one play into the fourth quarter. RB Reggie Gallaspy II scored from 23 yards out on 3rd & 6.

• The 52 points scored were the second-most for the Wolfpack in a bowl game all-time (56 vs. Kansas in the 2003 Tangerine Bowl). Nyheim Hines tied the school record for most rushing TDs in a bowl game (3 – Stan Fritts in 1972 Peach Bowl).

• With seven catches today, Jaylen Samuels became NC State's all-time career receiving leader as he finished his Wolfpack career with 202 catches.

• NC State was without the services of senior starters Bradley Chubb (DE), Tony Adams (OG) and Mike Stevens (CB). True freshman Joshua Fedd-Jackson started for Adams, the second true freshman to notch a start this season (Chris Ingram – NIC).
