NASHVILLE – The NC State women's basketball team (11-2) enters the holiday break on its second five-game winning streak of the season after earning an 83-72 road victory at Vanderbilt Tuesday evening inside Memorial Gymnasium.
Led by 18 points from Kiara Leslie, four Wolfpack players scored 12 points in the win. Kaila Ealey (11-14 FT) scored a career-high 17 to go along with her seven assists while teammates Chelsea Nelson (15) and Aislinn Konig (12 on 4-10 3FG) also had strong offensive games. Leslie scored her 18 points on 8-13 shooting from the field.
The Wolfpack out-rebounded its opponent for the 11th time this season, earning a commanding 38-25 edge over the Commodores. NC State shot 30-60 (.500) from the field and dished out 21 assists against 14 turnovers.
Vanderbilt's Rachel Bell led all scorers with 21 points on 9-17 shooting. She was joined in double figures by 12 points from Christa Reed and 10 each from Kayla Overbeck and Cierra Walker.
NC State worked its way out to a nine-point lead (17-8) late in the first quarter, but Vanderbilt answered quickly by hitting three straight three-pointers to pull even. The teams were deadlocked at 19 points apiece through the first 10 minutes of the game.
The Wolfpack was able to achieve and sustain some separation in the second quarter, going 3-8 from distance and bossing its way to a 13-5 rebounding advantage during the period to outscore the Commodores 17-13 and take a 36-32 advantage into the halftime break. Leslie led all scorers in the first half, scoring 11 points on 5-8 shooting from the field.
Vanderbilt took a 42-40 lead in the third quarter when Christa Reed scored with 4:23 remaining in the period, but NC State scored 10 of the next 16 points to take a 50-46 lead into the final 10 minutes.
NC State would allow the Commodores no closer than within three points in the fourth quarter and closed out the game by hitting 13 of 18 free throw attempts down the stretch.
The Wolfpack is next in action when the team opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at Virginia Tech on Thursday, Dec. 28. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Hokies is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from Blacksburg, Va.
