Wolfpack Swimmers Make #STATEment at European Championships

A world record, two gold medals and two silver medals highlight stellar meet for NC State swimmers

Copenhagen, Denmark – The present, past and future of the NC State swimming & diving program was represented by Simonas Bilis, Andreas Vazaios, Anton Ipsen, Tamila Holub, Nyls Korstanje and Sophie Hansson at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark from Dec. 13-17.
The Present
Andreas Vazaios (Greece)
Vazaios earned a silver medal in the 200 IM and set a new Greek national record as he finished in 1:53.27 seconds. His second silver medal came in an event he already holds the national record in, the 200 butterfly, as he clocked in at 1:51.23 seconds. Along with his pair of silver medals Vazaios also qualified for the semifinals of the 100 butterfly, where he finished seventh in his 50.89 and the semifinals of the 100 IM where he also finished seventh, clocking in at 53.52.
Anton Ipsen (Denmark)
Danish native Ipsen narrowly missed a spot on the podium in the 1500 freestyle; his time of 14:30.94 seconds saw him finish fourth.
Tamila Holub (Portugal)
Holub competed in the 400 freestyle, finishing in 4:11.34 seconds which saw her finish second in her heat. She finished fourth in her heat of the 800 freestyle, clocking in at 8:35.20 seconds.
The Past
Simonas Bilis (Lithuania)
Bilis qualified for the final of the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 47.09 and finishing fifth. He also advanced to the 50 freestyle semifinals, finishing in 21.32 which earned him fifth.
The Future
Nyls Korstanje (Netherlands)
Korstanje helped the Dutch team win gold and set a new world record in the mixed 4x50 freestyle relay. They finished in 1:28.39 seconds with Korstanje leading them off; he finished his split in 21.42. He again led off in the men's 4 x5 0 freestyle relay where the Dutch team finished fourth, clocking in at 1:24.61 seconds. Korstanje completed his split in 21.37.
In the 100 freestyle semifinal Korstanje finished fifth, touching the wall in 47.34. He also finished fifth in the semifinals of the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 21.35,
Sophie Hansson (Sweden)
Hansson proved why she is such a highly touted recruit, earning a gold medal in the 4x50 medley relay. Swimming the second leg, she completed her split in 29.30 and the team finished in 1:44.45 seconds.
She finished third in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 29.77. Hansson also qualified for the final of the 100 breaststroke where she finished in 1:05.28 seconds, finishing sixth. In her heat of the 200 breaststroke she clocked in at 2:24.89 seconds and finished sixth.
