Senior tallied 21 kills over the weekend and did not commit a hitting error
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following one of the best weekend's in her collegiate career, NC State volleyball's Kaitlyn Kearney has been tabbed Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Co-Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.
She shares the honor with Louisville setter Wilma Rivera. The selection marks the second consecutive week that a Wolfpack volleyball player has collected Co-Player of the Week honors as Kylie Pickrell secured the mention last week.
Kearney finished a stellar weekend with 21 kills on 30 attempts with ZERO attacking errors to compile a .700 attacking percentage in a pair of 3-0 sweeps against Syracuse and Boston College.
The Frisco, Texas, native swatted eight kills on 13 attacks versus the Orange last Friday, recording a .615 attacking percentage. Her play helped NC State tally 58 kills in the three-set match, the most by a team in the ACC this season and tied for the fourth most in the NCAA.
Against Boston College on Sunday, Kearney put down 13 kills to tie for the match high on just 17 swings. The senior middle blocker registered a .765 attacking percentage for the contest, the second best in the program's rally-scoring era. That total also ranks among the top 15 of the NCAA for a player with at least 15 attempts.
She owns the program record with an .889 clip against Campbell in 2015 thanks to 16 kills on 18 swings.
Kearney's strong weekend helped lift her season attacking percentage to .357, which is the best on the Wolfpack and third highest in the ACC.
She is also third on the team in kills this season with 188. Earlier this season, Kearney surpassed 1,000 career kills and also broke the overall program record for career blocks. She is currently the only player in the ACC with at least 1,000 kills and 500 blocks.
The honor is the first weekly award Kearney has garnered from the ACC since her freshman season when she was named the league's freshman of the week on three occasions.
NC State improved its overall record to 17-8 on the year, highlighted by a 12-2 mark in ACC matches with its wins against Syracuse and Boston College. The Pack is also unbeaten at home in conference matches with an 8-0 ledger.
The Wolfpack is back in action Thursday night when the Clemson Tigers visit Reynolds Coliseum. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. and the contest will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
