Wolfpack splits season series with Blue Devils

DURHAM, N.C. – After defeating Duke in the first meeting of the season, the NC State volleyball team could not complete the season sweep as the Blue Devils held on for the 3-2 (26-24, 14-25, 15-25, 26-24, 8-15) victory Wednesday afternoon inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.

NC State won the opening set for the 21^st time this season, but Duke countered by winning the next two to grab a 2-1 lead in the match. The Wolfpack would not be denied in the fourth and pushed the match to a fifth set before the Blue Devils earned the victory.

The Pack falls to 19-11 on the year and 14-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while Duke moves to 18-12 and 10-9 in conference action.

Match Rewind
- NC State scored five unanswered points to overcome a three-point deficit and grab a 20-18 lead in the opening frame.
- Duke countered with a 6-2 run to own set point at 24-22, but the Wolfpack fought off both attempts with a kill from Melissa Evans and a service ace from Kylie Pickrell.
- Bree Bailey and Lauryn Terry teamed up on the block assist to give NC State set point and a Duke ball-handling error gave the Pack a 26-24 first-set victory.
- The Wolfpack struggled with its passing in the second frame and the Blue Devils capitalized to win the set, 25-14, to even the match at one.
- In the third set, Duke pulled away with six consecutive points to take a 15-9 advantage and NC State could not overcome the deficit as the Blue Devils won it, 25-15.
- NC State would not be denied in the fourth set, as the Wolfpack rallied from a 20-15 deficit to win the frame.
- Duke went ahead 23-20, just two points shy of clinching the match, but NCSU responded with four unanswered points as part of a 6-1 run to close out the set, 26-24, and force a fifth set.
- The Blue Devils started fast in the fifth set and the Wolfpack never led.
- A Duke attacking error narrowed the margin to 8-7, but the Blue Devils countered with a 3-1 run and went on to claim the set, 15-8, to win the match in five sets.

Top Performers
- Julia Brown led all players in the contest with 19 kills and also recorded 15 digs to tally her 12^th double-double.
- At setter, Pickrell logged 29 assists and also pitched in defensively with 18 digs to record her 10^th double-double.
-Defensively, libero Emily Harris led the way with 22 digs and Makenzie Kuchmaner pitched in with 10 digs.
- Kaitlyn Kearney matched her season high with nine blocks.
