No. 13 NC State Rifle to Host North Georgia on Senior Day

Wolfpack to honor seniors Derya Pekari and Lauren Phillips
RALEIGH, N.C. – The 13th-ranked NC State rifle team will host No. 20 North Georgia Sunday afternoon inside Reynolds Coliseum, as the Wolfpack will honor its two seniors, Derya Pekari and Lauren Phillips, on Senior Day. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. with smallbore followed by the air rifle competition and an air rifle finals session.

In its last outing, NC State earned a 4654-4574 victory against The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. North Georgia defeated VMI in its most recent match with a score of 4580 on Nov. 4 in Lexington, Va.

The Wolfpack last competed inside Reynolds coliseum on Oct. 21, when NC State fired a season-high score of 4656 to earn the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) victory against No. 10 Akron.

Last Time Versus North Georgia
Sunday's contest will be the second meeting between the teams this season, as the Wolfpack and Nighthawks competed against each other at The Citadel in the season opener. NCSU recorded a score of 4630 in the match, while UNG earned a 4608.

North Georgia visited Reynolds Coliseum last spring, as NC State hosted the Nighthawks in a dual match on Jan. 29, 2017. The Wolfpack fired a score of 4657 in that match, headlined by a career-best score of 596 in the air rifle competition for Lauren Phillips, while the Hawks tallied an aggregate total of 4547.
Season High in Smallbore
The Pack logged a season-high score of 2314 in the smallbore event in the last outing for the squad at The Citadel. Phillips led all scorers in the individual event with a 587, while Will Marciniak was second with a 580.

Derya Pekari

Derya has been a mainstay in the Wolfpack's lineup since arriving on campus as a freshman in 2014. She was a member of NC State's travel squad and counting lineup in every match as a freshman. As a sophomore, she fired a career-best score of 590 against top-ranked West Virginia, which ties as the fifth-best mark in program history. Pekari earned All-Southeastern Air Rifle Conference (All-SEARC) Team honors following that season and was NC State's Scholar-Athlete by the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC). Her personal best aggregate score of 1166 is also the fifth-highest in program history. For her career, Derya has appeared in more than 50 matches.

Following graduation, Derya plans to enlist in the Navy to pursue a career as a Naval Pilot.

Lauren Phillips

Since transferring into the NC State rifle program, Lauren has made and instant impact. She turned in a stellar 2016-17 season, as she was named an All-American by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA). Phillips won the individual smallbore championship at the Great America Rifle Conference Championships last year to become the first NC State shooter to win an individual title in the conference. Lauren charted a career-best score of 596 in the air rifle competition last season at home, which ties as the second-best mark in program history. She was also an All-American, All-GARC and GARC individual smallbore champion at Nebraska before joining the Wolfpack.

Phillips is earning her Master's Degree in Social Work and hopes to become a military social worker.
