INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Sophomore Alexis Galarneau and junior Michael Ogden are off to a strong start for the Wolfpack at the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The two NC State men's tennis players went unbeaten on Wednesday during the first day of competition at the tournament.
Playing singles at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., Galarneau won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 over No. 77 Ewan Moore of Tulane.
Galarneau and Ogden then made the short trip to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for a doubles matchup with California's 39th-ranked Billy Griffith and J.T. Nishimura. They beat the Bears duo 6-2, 2-6, 10-5.
"Great day today for the Wolfpack," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "Alexis did a fantastic job of showing a lot of grit and heart, coming back from a set and a break down. I was really proud of his heart, but also his smarts to figure out how to get back in that match and then close it out. The guys also did a great job in the doubles. It was a good win over a very good team from Cal."
Galarneau's first round singles match against Moore marked the fourth time that he has faced a nationally ranked opponent this fall season.
The Wolfpack sophomore dropped the first set. Down 3-1 in the second set, Galarneau fought off two break points to trim his deficit to one game. He continued to gain momentum, earning his first break of the match to get back on serve. Galarneau capped off the second frame with another break to win it 6-4 and sent the match into a deciding third set.
Each player held serve for the majority of the final set until Galarneau, who was up 5-4, broke Moore to advance to the singles Round of 32.
In doubles, Galarneau and Ogden took quick control of the match against Griffith and Nishimura, breaking the California duo's serve immediately. The Wolfpack pair held serve through the entirety of the first set, winning it easily 6-2. The Bears took the second set by the same score to force a super tiebreaker.
Galarneau and Ogden, who came into the match having won three of four breakers this fall, continued to impress with a composed 10-5 win in the final frame. The victory marked their sixth win in the last seven outings and helped the pair to reach the doubles Round of 16.
UP NEXT:
Thursday will bring another full day of tennis for the Wolfpack. Galarneau will meet No. 36 Jordi Arconada of Texas A&M at 1:30 p.m. in the singles Round of 32. Arconada, who earned an at-large selection to the tournament, advanced out of the first round by defeating Cal's 49th-ranked Billy Griffith 7-5, 6-1.
Galarneau and Ogden will then play doubles against Texas' Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles at 7:45 p.m.
