RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team earned a hard fought 3-0 victory against the Duke Blue Devils Sunday afternoon inside Reynolds Coliseum to win its seventh consecutive match and remain undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play.
It was the first sweep for NC State in the series with Duke since Oct. 13, 2000 and just the second win for the Wolfpack in the last six meetings with the Blue Devils. Second-year head coach Linda Hampton-Keith is responsible for both of the wins and is 2-0 against Duke in her NC State tenure.
The Wolfpack moves to 11-6 on the year, highlighted by a perfect 6-0 mark in conference play which matches the best start for the program since 1988. Duke falls to 11-6 and 3-3 against ACC opponents.
Worth Noting
- The Wolfpack remains one of just two undefeated teams in ACC play, as the Pittsburgh Panthers are also 6-0.
- NC State has won its last seven matches, which is the longest win streak of Hampton-Keith's head coaching career.
- The Wolfpack remains undefeated against in-state opponents at 5-0 with wins against Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, High Point and UNCW.
- NCSU is a perfect 3-0 in the month of October and has not dropped a set.
Quoting Hampton-Keith
Overall thoughts…
"Our team is really developing a pretty relentless identity, just a lot of fight in them," said Hampton-Keith. "I know we were down 16-10 in the second set, and then 24-19. Our team just continues to show that they know how to gut out a win, even from behind. I was really impressed with them again today. Our confidence is growing and building. Today was another example of that, so I'm pretty proud of them."
On the tenacity and fight in the players…
"When the chips are down like that, as they were, we just ask them to go be relentless. Whatever it is, just go do it relentlessly and give everything you have because you never know. Then all of a sudden, you have those one-arm, weird [saves] start popping up, the play stays alive and you give yourself a chance.
"Even just by your effort alone, you can inspire and instill so much confidence in your teammates and each other. That was really fun to watch them continue to grow. Not just as players, but to really just walk away confident as young women. That's what we're all about here."
