Softball Wins One, Ties One In Home Fall Opener

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team welcomed East Carolina on Friday evening to Dail Stadium for a doubleheader. In the first game the Wolfpack earned an 8-1 win, while the nightcap ended in a 5-5 tie.
Game One
In the first game NC State tallied seven hits in its 8-1 victory, while Kama Woodall, Peyton Silverman and Devin Wallace all saw time in the circle.
The Pirates got on the board first when Tate McClellan hit a home run to left center in the second inning. Macauley Prickett knotted the score in the bottom frame as she scored from third on Timberlyn Shurbutt's groundout to second base.
In the third inning the Pack scored five runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead. Angie Rizzi gave the Pack a 2-1 advantage with an RBI triple, and Alyssa Compton pushed two more runs across the plate with a hit to center field but was thrown out when trying to turn the play into a double. An RBI-single by Shurbutt allowed Haylee Kobziak to score the final run in the frame.
A 2-RBI single up the middle by Lily Bishop in the fourth inning extended NC State's lead to 8-1. In the final three innings both teams were only able to muster up one hit apiece.
Game Two
In the second game ECU scored first with a three-run home run by McClellan in the first inning. The Pack responded with two runs in the bottom fame as Sam Russ crossed home plate on a groundout to second base while Rizzi was brought home on a bases-loaded walk.
In the third the Pirates added two more runs with a 2-RBI single up the middle by Karlie Smith, and in the sixth the Pack knotted the game with three runs on as many hits. Rizzi brought Compton home from third on a fielder's choice after she led off the frame with a double, while pinch hitter Chandley Garner scored on Russ's sacrifice fly and Cheyenne Balzer drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Pirates went in order in the top of the seventh, and despite a leadoff double by Compton in the bottom frame the Pack was unable to add another run for the win.
As a team NC State registered seven hits while Wallace, Harli Hubbard and Brittany Nimmo split time in the circle.
The Pack returns to action Saturday when it hosts Georgia Highland in a doubleheader at Dail Stadium. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
