Junior transfer garners first ACC weekly honor
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After breaking the rally-scoring era program record with 70 assists in Sunday's match, NC State setter Kylie Pickrell has been named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Volleyball Co-Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.
Â
Pickrell garners her first ACC weekly honor and the first player of the week mention for the Wolfpack this season. She collects the award along with Miami's Olga Strantzali.
Â
The Coppell, Texas, native enjoyed a record-breaking weekend, as the junior broke the program's rally-scoring era record for assists in a single match with 70 in Sunday's five-set win at Florida State. That total is the most by any player in the ACC this season and ties as the third most by any player among NCAA Division I.
Â
Her stellar play helped NC State overcome a 2-1 deficit and rally to win the match in thrilling fashion. Pickrell handed out 16 assists in the first set, 17 in the second set, nine in the third, 13 in the fourth set and 15 in the fifth set.
Â
Pickrell's 70 assists also allowed NC State to break the rally-scoring era program record for team assists in a match, as the Wolfpack collected 78 – the most by any team in the ACC this season and sixth most by any team in NCAA Division I this year. Additionally, her setting led directly to the Wolfpack breaking the rally-scoring era program record for team kills in a match with 80 – the most by any team in the ACC this season and tied for the eighth most by any team among NCAA Division I this year.
Â
She also contributed eight digs in Sunday's match, while handing out 27 assists and 10 digs against Miami on Friday night to earn her eighth double-double.
Â
For the weekend, Pickrell averaged 12.12 assists per set to allow NC State to remain leading the ACC with 13.22 assists per set for a total of 1,163 assists. She leads all individuals in the conference with 913 assists.
Â
NC State owns a 15-8 overall record this season, highlighted by a 10-2 mark in ACC play to tie for first place in the conference. The Wolfpack returns to action at home Friday night to take on the Syracuse Orange. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside Reynolds Coliseum, as the Pack observes Alumni Weekend.
