Senior Julia Brown chosen as one of 30 candidates for the accolade
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – NC State outside hitter Julia Brown has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award in NCAA women's volleyball, announced Tuesday by the organization.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.Â
Â
The accolade honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. It is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring.
"I'm really excited for Julia," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "It's truly a fitting recognition and honor, I can't think of a better representative of our program. She meets all of the criteria for the award. She's a great student, she's an excellent teammate and is great in the community.
Â
"She's a wonderful representative of what it means to be a part of the Wolfpack volleyball program."
Brown has enjoyed a strong start to her final season with the Wolfpack, as she leads the team with 208 kills, which ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). She also paces the squad in digs with 162, averaging 2.75 digs per set.
Â
The Davidson, N.C., native surpassed 1,000 career kills earlier this season to become just the 11th player in NC State program history to accomplish the feat. Brown is one of 79 active NCAA Division I student-athletes to reach the milestone.
Â
Â
Last season, Brown set the rally-scoring era program record with 489 kills, the third most in the conference and 34th nationally. She was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-East Region Team and was a First Team All-ACC Selection.
Â
Off the court, the senior has excelled in the classroom, as she is a three-time ACC Honor Roll selection and was tabbed to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team in pursuit of her degree in business administration.
Â
Brown is the only player from the ACC listed among the group.
Â
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.Â
Â
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December. Minnesota's Paige Tapp was the winner of the 2016 Senior CLASS Award.
