Thoughts from Head Coach Braden Holloway
"This was a big meet for the women. Unfortunately, we were a little shorthanded but we needed some new faces to step up and emerge and we had that today. I'm really proud of them; there were a lot of new names that really stood out today as well as the upperclassmen. Seeing the freshmen excel is really important for the development of our program.
Every time you have your first meet of the season, especially when it's toward the end of October, they're antsy to just get up and race and I think they did that. We have some guys that are talented and can do some different races but a lot of times we can't put them in those races as much. We wanted to try and do that this first meet to see where we stood in a couple of areas and the guys stood up which was good to see."
Familiar Faces
Sophomore Ky-lee Perry showed why she was last season's ACC freshman of the year, winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 49.38 and the 100 freestyle thanks to her finish of 49.38.
Senior Hannah Moore, who is also a member of the USA National Team, led the way for the Wolfpack women in the 1000-yard freestyle, taking first with a time of 9:39.67 seconds. She also won the 500 freestyle thanks to her time of 4:49.63.
Junior Justin Ress carried the momentum he gained over the summer where he was named World University Games Most Decorated Male Athlete over to tonight. He won the 100-yard backstroke in 47.36
James Bretscher impressed in the 200 butterfly as his time of 1:46.96 took first place, while junior Jacob Molacek was likewise impressive in the 50 freestyle as his time of 20.45 saw him win the event. Mark McGlaughlin's time of 44.24 in the 100 freestyle also saw him capture first place. Anton Ipsen also impressed in the 500 freestyle, finishing first with a time of 4:19.71
The Wolfpack swept the 200 backstroke events with Mackenzie Glover winning the women's race with a time of 1:58.96 seconds while Hennessey Stuart took out the men's thanks to his finish of 1:45.53 seconds.
Newcomers Excelling
Freshman Julia Poole won two events on the night; the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.69 and the 200 freestyle thanks to her finish of 1:49.38
Taking a page from older sister Hannah's book, freshman Kathleen Moore burst onto the scene in emphatic fashion as she won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.77 She also finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.12
Wolfpack Relays
The NC State men were dominant in the 200 medley relay as the team of Andreas Vazaios, Jacob Molacek, Ryan Held & Justin Ress took first thanks to their finish of 1:26.24 seconds while the team of Hennessey Stuart, Daniel Graber, James Bretscher and Giovanni Izzo finished with a time of 1:29.15 which was good enough for second.
The women also took first in the event thanks to Danika Huizinga, Jacqueline Clabeaux, Ky-lee Perry and Lexie Lupton's time of 1:41.71 seconds.
Divers Stepping Up
Diving was a strong point on the night for the Wolfpack, as it won two out of the four events. Sophomore Rachel Burston took first in the women's 1-meter with a score of 263.40, while sophomore Madeline Kline won the 3-meter and qualified for NCAA Zone B's.
"I think today was a decent day on the boards," said diving coach Yahya Radman. "James had a very good 3-meter, while there's a lot of technical stuff we need to work on to bring him up on where we'd like him to be. Stewart and Holt have a good starting point to build their season on. I think their best stuff is yet to come. Huge kudos goes out to Madeline Kline and Rachel Burston for winning tonight and to Madeline for punching her ticket to zones. She did it with not her full list and we are trying to work on some things to build up skill and have her ready for the end of the year. Tonight was a good gauge to see where we need to go. It should be exciting to see their progress over the next couple of weeks. The only thing we were missing was Harrison due to injury; having him back will make it even more of an exciting show."
