CARY, N.C. – Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden of the NC State men's tennis team advanced past Duke's Sean Sculley and Nick Stachowiak in the ITA Carolina Regional doubles semifinals Tuesday before falling to Wake Forest's Christian Seraphim and Julian Zlobinksy in the final at the Cary Tennis Park.
The 14th-ranked duo recorded a 5-1 mark at the ITA Carolina Regional and became the fourth Wolfpack pair in the last five years to reach the tournament's championship doubles match.
"It was good to see them back out and putting into play some of the things that we've been working on in practice," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "Being able to do that at a high level with a very strong field here at the tournament was great. I'm really proud of the way that they continue to implement the on-court coaching that we've been giving them. The super positive energy that they brought to each match was awesome, and it was a good benchmark for our team moving forward."
All four pairs in the semifinals were from ACC schools, with NC State facing Duke and Wake Forest matching up against Clemson on the other side of the bracket.
Galarneau and Ogden started strong against Sculley and Stachowiak, breaking the latter's serve twice to win the first frame 6-2. The second set presented more of a challenge, with Blue Devils rebounding to take it 7-5.
The teams played a tiebreaker for the third set. The Wolfpack gained a 4-0 lead off of an Ogden return down the line, a service hold by Ogden, and another down-the-line shot, this time a backhand that Galarneau lashed to beat Stachowiak at the net. Galarneau and Ogden maintained control in the tiebreaker, besting Duke 10-6.
The duo went on to the final for a matchup against Seraphim and Zlobinksy, who advanced to the title match on a walkover. Galarneau and Ogden started with great energy and once again took a lead, winning the first set 6-2. Wake Forest responded to take the second frame 6-3 and forced a tiebreaker to decide the match.
Seraphim and Zlobinsky took control of the breaker, winning it 10-0 to end a great tournament run for Galarneau and Ogden.
