RALEIGH – The NC State men's tennis team is set to continue its fall season at the 2017 ITA Carolina Regional Championship at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The tournament runs Friday through Tuesday and features players from 24 universities across North and South Carolina.
The singles and doubles champions from the region advance to the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which runs from Nov. 1-5 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. Sophomore Alexis Galarneau already secured his spot at the fall championships after reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships last weekend.
Seven members of the Wolfpack men's tennis team will see action in singles play at the ITA Carolina Regional. Juniors Georgiy Malyshev, Michael Ogden, Igor Saveljic, and Ivan Saveljic all return to the court for the first time since the Duke James Bonk Invite in September.
The tournament also marks the career debut for three freshmen members of the team as Morgan Lohan, Collin Shick, and Tristan Smith compete in their first collegiate singles matches.
The doubles draw has not yet been released, but doubles play will begin Saturday.
MATCHUPS:
Malyshev is the No. 25 seed in the singles draw after starting the season with a 3-1 record. He faces Davidson's David Hager in the opening round of play.
Ogden, Igor, and Ivan will also play in their fifth matches of the year. Ogden matches up against East Carolina's Will Bissett, Igor takes on UNC-Chapel Hill's Ladd Harrison, and Ivan plays Furman's Jake Bhangdia.
Lohan will begin his NC State career against Maksym Konovalov of North Carolina Central, and Shick plays his first collegiate match against 76th-ranked Felipe Sarrasague, the tournament's No. 5 seed from Elon. Smith debuts against Carlos Kelaidis of Clemson.
