Pack Rolls Past Troy
1/20/2017 7:57:00 PM | Men's Tennis
NC State dropped the doubles point, before winning four-straight singles matches to clinch the victory.
"The bounce back in singles was tremendous," said head coach Jon Choboy. "Alexis took care of business to get us on the board. Igor was challenged, but competed like a man. After Georgiy lost the first set, he buckled down and came back, which was huge. Taking those top-four singles right off the bat was the match."
"We actually got ourselves in position in doubles. In the first match of the season, we weren't engaging or putting ourselves in position like we should. We are now putting ourselves in position, we just have to finish and execute. That's coachable and we can get through that."
"Getting the guys to do the right things is a step in the right direction today. We practice to play doubles the way doubles are supposed to be played and it takes a while to get to that point. We have a lot of young guys outside of Nick that haven't played doubles that way. Once we get that down, we'll be in good shape. There is just a lot of teaching and learning going on."
Troy took advantage of a pair of close doubles matches, winning 6-3 on court one and 6-4 on court three to take the point. The final doubles match remained unfinished at 5-5 on court two.
The Pack quickly rebounded in singles play, winning three consecutive matches in straight sets to take a 3-1 lead. The Pack clinched the match with a come-from-behind victory on court four and added another win at No. 6 singles.
No. 37 Nick Horton and No. 103 Alexis Galarneau picked up their first wins of the dual season, winning the first two singles matches of the day. Horton moves to T-10th in school history with 73 overall singles victories. The senior is just two wins shy from moving to eighth in school history.
After debuting at No. 4 singles against ODU, Igor Saveljic moved to No. 3 singles and added a straight-set victory to reaming undefeated for his fourth singles win of the year.
Georgiy Malyshev then added a three-set victory at No. 4 singles to win his third-consecutive match and clinch the overall match.
Sean Burnette provided the Pack with an insurance point, winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles for the Pack's fifth point.
