Wolfpack duo tabbed to all-tournament team
OXFORD, Miss. – NC State volleyball's Julia Brown and Maggie Speaks have been named to the Ole Miss Invitational All-Tournament Team. The Wolfpack finished as the runner-up in the event after dropping a 3-2 decision to the host Rebels in the championship match.
Â
Brown turned in a stellar weekend at the outside hitter position for NC State. She finished with 52 kills, 31 digs, five assists and three service aces. The Davidson, N.C., native put down 13 kills in the first match of the weekend against McNeese State and also notched 12 digs to record a double-double.
Â
The junior swatted a career-best 21 kills in the Wolfpack's four-set victory versus UT Arlington. In addition, she collected 10 digs to tally her second double-double of the weekend and third of the season. Brown followed that performance with 18 kills and nine digs against Ole Miss.
Â
The award is the second of Brown's career, as she was named the MVP of the South Carolina Gamecock Invitational last season.
Â
Speaks did a fantastic job orchestrating the Wolfpack offense over the weekend. She recorded 40 or more assists in all three matches and ended with 134 assists, 25 digs, 11 kills and six aces over three matches. The senior setter dished out 41 assists in the first contest against McNeese State, helping NC State to a 3-0 sweep.
Â
Against UT Arlington, the native of Camden, S.C., handed out 45 assists and collected 11 digs. She enjoyed one of her best matches of the weekend in the championship against Ole Miss with 48 assists, 10 digs and five kills to notch her third double-double of the year and second in as many matches.
Â
The award is the fourth of Speaks' career, as she garnered the MVP honor at the DoubleTree Cary Classic last season and was also on the all-tournament team at the South Carolina Gamecock Invitational. In 2014, she earned a spot on the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Classic All-Tournament Team.
Â
NC State returns to action Friday, Sept. 9, when it hosts Delaware in the newly renovated Reynolds Coliseum. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. and the match will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
