RALEIGH – Despite two impressive goals from redshirt sophomore forward Ade Taiwo, the NC State men's soccer team fell 3-2 Sunday night to visiting North Florida in the 2016 home opener at Dail Soccer Stadium.
The Wolfpack (1-2-0) fell behind in the 13th minute on Milan Kovac's third goal of the season but immediately responded just 18 seconds later when Taiwo scored his first goal of the evening. The forward received a nice through ball from teammate Lukas Zarges and beat starting goalkeeper Tord Pedersen to level the match at one apiece.
NC State then took the lead in the 17th minute when Taiwo scored his second of the contest. After defender Simon Blotko threaded a ball through to him, the Raleigh native beat one defender and launched a hard finish off the inside of the near post and in.
North Florida (2-0-1), a 2015 NCAA Tournament participant, came out of the halftime break focused on immediately getting back into the match. The Ospreys were successful, pulling level with the Wolfpack in the 49th minute when Adrian Nunez nodded a Jay Bolt cross just inside the far post and outside the reach of NC State goalkeeper Alex McCauley.
Josh Castellanos gave the Ospreys a lead they would not relinquish in the 77th minute, scoring on a breakaway after Bolt beat the Wolfpack defense with a well-placed lob.
The Wolfpack made a furious attempt to equalize in the waning moments of the match, but a header by Tanner Roberts went wide of the target during the best late chance in the 89th minute.
NC State returns to action in its 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference opener Friday, Sept. 9 at home against No. 6 Syracuse. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Orange is set for 7 p.m. from Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh.
