SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – NC State volleyball assistant coach Nicki Holmes recently helped guide the United States Girls' Youth National Team (GYNT) to a runner-up finish at the NORCECA Women's U18 Continental Championship held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Â
The U.S. won four consecutive matches to advance to the championship match where the squad was defeated by the Dominican Republic in five sets, 3-2. In the process of advancing to the championship, Team USA qualified for the 2017 FIVB Women's U18 World Championship to be hosted by Argentina in June.
Â
Â
Team USA opened the NORCECA Championship with a 3-0 victory against Guatemala and also swept Barbados in its second match of the championship. In its first meeting with Dominican Republic, the U.S. GYNT won the contest 3-2 to clinch a spot in the semifinals.
Another hard-fought 3-2 victory earned the U.S. a berth in the championship, as the Americans took down host Puerto Rico in the semifinals.
Â
In the championship match, the U.S. led 2-0 before the Dominican Republic rallied to win the final three sets to claim the gold medal at the event. Team USA settled for silver after dropping the fifth set, 15-13.
Â
Â
Holmes, in his first year with the Wolfpack volleyball program, served as the technical coordinator with the USA Team responsible for keeping statistics for the team using DataVolley software, scouting opponents at the event and match video analysis.
Â
NC State is off to a 6-4 start this season, after compiling a 2-1 record in the Wolfpack Invitational, the program's first home weekend in the newly renovated Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack returns to action at home Saturday at 6 p.m. against Campbell.
