HARRISONBURG, Va. – The NC State men's soccer team was narrowly defeated by Radford Friday afternoon in the 2016 season opener, falling by a final score of 1-0 at University Park in the opening match of the JMU Invitational.
Receiving eight votes in the NSCAA Preseason Top-25 poll to rank 30th in the nation, the Highlanders scored the lone goal of the match in the 50th minute when Garland Smith volleyed a rebound into the back of the net. Senior goalkeeper Alex McCauley made a solid stop on a shot by Evan Szklennik, but the rebound shot high into the air and Smith was able to connect on it before the defense closed in.
NC State battled back over the final 15 minutes of the match, registering two shots on target and multiple opportunities. Lukas Zarges attempted a hard shot from distance in the 78th minute and Ade Taiwo was through on goal seven minutes later thanks to a nice pass by Travis Wannemuehler, but Radford goalkeeper Aitor Blanco was able to deny both attempts.
McCauley and Radford's Blanco each finished the match with four saves. Offensively for the Wolfpack, Zarges (2), Taiwo (1), and Julius Duchscherer (1) recorded four shots on goal.
The Wolfpack returns to action Sunday at 4:30 p.m. against tournament host JMU. Sunday's match will be broadcast live for free here.
