Fans receive first glimpse of the 2016 squad
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State fans received their first glimpse of the 2016 volleyball team Sunday afternoon, as the program held its annual intrasquad scrimmage inside Carmichael Gym. The White Team emerged victorious, 3-1, but players were alternating between the teams.
The Wolfpack was strong offensively and defensively in its first intrasquad scrimmage under the leadership of first-year head coach Linda Hampton-Keith and her staff.
Hampton-Keith's Comments
On today's scrimmage…
"Today was a great opportunity to play in front of fans first and foremost. It was really fun to share all of the hard work that we've been putting in during the preseason and up to today with our parents and fans, so that was really fun.
"As far as the play on the court goes, we're really excited. We saw a lot of good things from a lot of different people. It's always fun to put the jersey on and get to represent the Wolfpack in front of fans."
On the players that stood out during the scrimmage…
"Several players stood out today. We talked kind of a core group of returners and I thought they did a great job of anchoring things down. Perry [Ramsey] and Julia [Brown] did a nice job in their roles, along with Rachel [Eppley] in her role as libero.
"We're still trying to determine exactly what system we're going to be in with Maggie [Speaks] as a returning setter and Tori [Dozier] coming in as a freshman setter in addition to Becky [Porter] at the position. We're trying to figure out how to maximize our offense with the setters that we have, but I thought they all did a great job."
Match Notes
- Junior outside hitter Perry Ramsey led the team offensively in the match with 13 kills, while sophomore Teni Sopitan contributed 12.
- Kaitlyn Kearney, a junior from Frisco, Texas, contributed eight kills along with classmate Erin Chatman, who also put down eight kills.
- Junior Julia Brown had seven kills in the contest.
- Maggie Speaks, Becky Porter and Tori Dozier split time at the setter position. Speaks handed out 32 assists, while Porter dished out 17 and Dozier pitched in with 16.
- Defensively, Emily Harris paced the Pack with 17 digs and senior Rachel Eppley collected 12.
- Kearney and Sopitan were a force at the net with 13 and seven blocks, respectively.
