NC State baseball sends five players to the draft for third consecutive year
NC State's Ryan Williamson and Cody Beckman were selected Saturday on day three of the 2016 MLB Draft, the fourth and fifth Wolfpack players picked.
The Washington Nationals took Williamson with the 454th pick in the 15th round. The New York Mets made Beckman a 25th-round selection with the 760th pick.Â
Williamson and Beckman join Will Gilbert, Andrew Knizner, and Preston Palmeiro, who heard their names called Friday.Â
For the third year in a row, NC State had five or more players taken. The quintet gives Elliott Avent a total of 92 NC State players drafted in his 20 years as head coach, and 17 in the last three seasons, the most for the Pack over a three-year stretch since 2008-10.
Palmeiro went first, selected by the Baltimore Orioles with the 211th pick, a seventh round selection. Knizner followed 15 picks later, a seventh round choice of the St. Louis Cardinals. Only six picks later, Gilbert flew off the board to the Oakland A's, an eighth-round selection, 232nd pick.
The NC State baseball staff and community expresses deep gratitude to every departing Wolfpacker, drafted or not, for their service to the program, and role in our future. Best of luck.
