INDIANAPOLIS – No. 45 Martina Frantova is set to begin competition at the NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday in a round of 64 matchup opposite No. 33 Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss. Frantova and Hartono will meet for first-round play at 3 p.m. ET at the Michael Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Frantova's at-large selection to the 2016 singles championship comes as just the fourth-ever individual bid granted to a member of the NC State women's tennis program. In her first season with the Wolfpack Frantova helped guide the team to a historical season, claiming victories at the No. 1 singles positions in all six of the Pack's record-setting conference wins during the regular season.
STATISTICS: Martina Frantova
The Slovakia native captured 11 wins over nationally-ranked opponents during the 2015-16 season. Frantova highlighted the fall tournament season with defeats of No. 37 Kennedy Schaffer of Georgia and No. 5 Josie Kuhlman of Florida on her way towards claiming the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Clay Court Invitational title. During 2016 regular-season play the Pack's top performer netted wins over eight nationally-ranked opponents including three in the final week of play, garnering her the season's final ACC Player of the Week honor.
After transferring from Mississippi State at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season, Frantova quickly became one of the ACC's leading performers tallying records of 30-13 overall and 14-10 during the dual season. Her winning record has maintained her a position in the national poll throughout the entire regular season and earned her a spot on the All-ACC Second Team in her first season with the conference as well as the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Region Player to Watch award.
SCOUTING REPORT:
As a sophomore at Ole Miss, Hartono boasts a 20-13 overall, 13-7 dual record at the No. 1 singles position. Her 6-5 record opposite SEC opponents earned her an All-SEC Second Team selection adding to her All-Freshmen Team honor in the previous season.
STATISTICS: Arianne Hartono
Hartono captured a few strong wins during her sophomore stint, including three over top-20 opponents, but carries a four-match losing streak into the first round of NCAA singles play. Reaching her peak rank at No. 22 in the final week of the regular-season, the Rebel dropped her last two matchups to lower ranked opponents including a three-set loss to the 62nd-ranked player. A then No. 29-ranked Hartono faced two upsets during conference tournament play, swept by both No. 66 and No. 71-ranked singles opponents.
The winner of Wednesday's round of 64 matchup will advance to the second round of championship play Thursday among a field of 32, facing either No. 24 Saska Gavrilovska of Texas A&M or fellow ACC player, Miami's No. 9 Stephanie Wagner.
