RALEIGH - NC State student athletes along with Duke Energy's North Carolina President, David Fountain, visited Smith Magnet Elementary School on Monday morning to kick off this year's Wolfpack Blitz: Reading with the PACK week.
Â
The NC State Athletics Office of Student-Athlete Enhancement and Leadership partnered with Duke Energy for the second consecutive year to sponsor Wolfpack Blitz, which helps to emphasize the importance of reading at a young age by providing resources and role-model interaction.
Â
Ten student athletes from a variety of Wolfpack sports, including basketball, football, gymnastics, cheerleading and swimming and diving, were among the first to participate in this year's Wolfpack Blitz event.
Â
"Our children are the future leaders of our communities, and it's important that they are equipped at a young age with the reading skills needed to thrive in the classroom and throughout life," said David Fountain, Duke Energy's North Carolina president. "We're proud to team up with NC State and its outstanding student-athletes to foster a passion for learning at local elementary schools by making reading fun and exciting for students."
Â
Five third grade classrooms at Smith Elementary hosted the 2016 Wolfpack Blitz kickoff. After a special reading from student athletes and David Fountain, followed by a question and answer period on topics of school, sports and personal life, each student received his/her own book provided through the program's partnership with Duke Energy.
Â
Wolfpack Blitz continues through March 24. Student athletes will visit a total of eight Wake County elementary schools, providing over 2,000 individual students with his/her own book to help encourage active reading and early childhood literacy.
