RALEIGH - No. 55 NC State women's tennis is set for its second weekend of conference play as it travels to Louisville Friday and returns home two days later to host No. 24 Syracuse Sunday, 10 a.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
WELCOME TO THE ACC:
Last weekend the Wolfpack began its ACC slate on the road. Facing the tough conference competition for the first time this season, the Pack fell 6-1 to No. 36 Georgia Tech and 5-2 to No. 34 Clemson two days later. As a result, the team moved to No. 55 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national poll, still maintaining a double-digit improvement from the highest ranking of the 2014-15 season at No. 69.
The ACC is known for its elite level of competition and top-ranked programs. There are currently six ACC schools ranked Top-25 in the nation, the second-most among Division I conferences.
SCOUT REPORT:
Louisville is one of the few ACC teams not among the current team rankings. This will be NC State's first unranked conference matchup of the season however, only its third into the conference slate. The Cardinals has yet to defeat any of its four ACC opponents, most recently falling 6-1 to No. 16 Virginia.
MORE: Louisville season schedule and results
The Pack continues to improve its ability to set the tone early in doubles play and Friday's dual at Louisville presents a viable opportunity to execute that effectively.
The Orange broke into the Top-25 for the first time in program history earlier this week when it listed No. 24 in the ITA poll. This comes as a result of a 4-3 win over No. 30 Notre Dame on Sunday. Syracuse is currently 8-1 on the season with its only loss of 5-2 coming from No. 9 Virginia. The No. 24-ranked program has two ranked wins on its resume, both over ACC opponents. The Orange could exit the weekend on the losing side of a conference record as it travels to No. 6 Duke Friday before facing No. 55 NC State Sunday morning.
IN-DEPTH: Syracuse season statistics
No. 24 Syracuse travels to Raleigh with a roster that includes three ranked individuals highlighted by No. 42 Anna Shkudun.
SIMON SAYS:
"Coming into this weekend's ACC matches I know all of the girls are keen to bounce back from last week's road trip. It's going to be nice to get a run out finally at home on Sunday against Syracuse but first we've got another road game, this time at Louisville. Last spring the Louisville match was probably the closest one we played and I expect it to be a battle again. Even though this was a short practice week I'm confident we've made adjustments and it will be interesting to see how that match plays out. Syracuse is having a great start to its season, currently having a program-high ranking. As with every ACC match, this provides a great opportunity for us to move towards achieving some of our season goals." - Simon Earnshaw, head coach
Fans attending Sunday's match are asked to park in the West Deck located on Varsity Drive - see match day information for directions and details.
