TALLAHASSEE - Anthony 'Cat' Barber shook off night full of double-teams, full-court pressure and physical play to score 31 points in NC State's 77-73 loss at Florida State on Monday night.
Barber, the ACC's leading scorer, 10-for-17 from the floor - including three 3-pointers - and 8-for-10 at the free throw line for his third straight game with at least 30 points. Earlier on Monday, Barber was voted ACC Player of the Week after scoring 66 points in the two games prior to Monday night. He also added four assists and four rebounds in yet another 40-minute effort.
Pack Players Not Named Barber: Caleb Martin had a strong shooting night, scoring 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting. He made four 3-pointers and grabbed a team-best six rebounds. Abdul-Malik Abu scored 12 points and Cody Martin added 10
Comeback Pack: Late in the first half, NC State found itself down 36-20. The Wolfpack trailed by double figures for most of the first half. Behind Barber's brilliance and long-range shooting from Caleb Martin, the Pack on multiple occasions came within two points.A pull-up 3-pointer from Barber with 2:58 left got the Pack within 73-71 and later a steal and pair of free throws by Barber made it 75-73 in the final minute.A jumper by FSU's Dwayne Bacon with 15 seconds iced the game for the Seminoles (15-7, 5-5).
Surge After Halftime: The Wolfpack slowed the Seminoles down with a zone defense, and the Pack turned stops into points. NC State shot .586 during the second half and finished with 47 points after halftime. Florida State led 38-26 at the half, but within nine minutes of game time, NC State had cut the lead to four points.
Gott Said It: "I would say I'm really proud of my team. We made some adjustments at halftime. Our guys played extremely hard and with a lot of courage. We came up a play or two short. The guys never quit, they battled. I thought Dwayne Bacon made a couple of critical shots from them, tough shots. Our guys responded in the second half. In the first half, their pressure and trapping was kind of like PeeWee basketball. When the other team has a good player, you just double-team him. That's what Leonard (Hamilton) did with Cat. We didn't handle it very well. We were out of sync and out of rhythm. We come out in the second half and shoot 59 percent and have two turnovers against all that pressure and I thought our kids played fantastic. We just came up a play or two short."
Up Next: NC State (12-11, 2-8) doesn't play until Saturday, Feb. 6 when it travels to Duke. The 244th meeting between State and Duke will be a 2 p.m. tip on ESPN.
