Palo Alto, Calif. - The NC State women's soccer team's breakthrough season came to an end Sunday afternoon at Cagan Stadium. The match was much closer than the final score suggested, as Santa Clara advanced to the Elite 8 with a 3-0 win.
NC State concludes its year with an 11-8-2 (4-5-1 ACC) record for its most wins since 1996 and its second best ACC season in program history. After ending a 20-year NCAA Championship appearance drought, the Pack made an impressive run to the Sweet 16, marking the first third-round appearance since 1996 and only the fourth third-round appearance in school history.
In the Sweet 16 match, Santa Clara capitalized on an awarded penalty in the 21st minute. NC State closed the half with a decisive attacking display, but couldn't find the finishing touch. The Pack held a 9-5 advantage in shots and maintained almost all the possession following the goal. Santa Clara entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
NC State's offensive dominance continued throughout the second half. The Wolfpack concluded the match with an 18-7 advantage in shots and forced the Santa Clara keeper to make six saves.
NC State came agonizingly close to the equalizer late in the match, as Tziarra King sliced through the Broncos' backline. She placed her shot past the keeper, but the shot rebounded off the post and back into play.
Minutes later, Santa Clara scored its second goal off a counter attack after the Pack poured players forward in search of the equalizer.
The Broncos were also awarded a late goal off a free kick in the 84th minute, which appeared to have been saved off the line.
