NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named NC State's men's head coach Rollie Geiger and women's head coach Laurie Henes Southeast Regional Coaches of the Year for 2016, announced on Tuesday.
The NC State men's and women's cross country teams swept the NCAA Southeast Regional last Friday in Charlottesville, Virginia, earning both teams berths to the NCAA Championships held in Terre Haute, Indiana on Saturday.
In his 39th year as head coach, Rollie Geiger led the men's team to a Regional title and had four All-Regional finishers. Since 1998, Coach Geiger has won Regional Coach of the Year seven times.
After a dominant 53-point win and a total of five All-Regional finishers, Laurie Henes was also awarded the Southeast Regional Coach of the Year, which has recently been renamed the Rollie Geiger Award, celebrating his coaching legacy. The USTFCCCA chose to rename 13 of its NCAA Division I Cross Country Regional Athlete and Coach of the Year awards to honor coaches who have established "long-lasting traditions of excellence within their own regions and as representatives of their regions at the national level." This is Coach Henes' fourth time receiving the award.
The women's team has consistently been ranked in the top five nationally this year, and currently sit with their highest ranking of No. 2. The men's team jumped 10 places in the final USTFCCCA Division I poll after their recent ACC and Regional success, and will enter the NCAA Championships as the 17th ranked team.
