Daughter of Wolfpack Legend Thurl Bailey to join volleyball program
RALEIGH, N.C. – First-year head coach Linda Hampton-Keith and her staff have announced the addition of outside hitter BreElle Bailey to the NC State volleyball program. The Arizona State transfer will have one season of eligibility remaining and be eligible to compete during the 2017 season.
Â
"I've had the good fortune of coaching Bree for the last three years and I'm both thrilled and honored she has chosen to finish her collegiate career here at NC State," said Hampton-Keith. "Bree will continue to have a positive influence on and off the court for her new team. On the court, she is a force to be reckoned with.Â
Â
"She not only has the physical attributes and experience to make an immediate impact in this conference, but also noteworthy is her work ethic, her commitment to growth and becoming the best player she can be. "
Â
If the last name sounds familiar to Wolfpack fans it is because Bailey is the daughter of Wolfpack basketball legend Thurl Bailey, member of the 1983 National Championship Team. The younger Bailey is also a standout on the court as well, but uses her jumping abilities to spike rather than shoot.
Â
While at Arizona State, Bailey was a 2015 Pacific 12 (PAC-12) All-Conference Honorable Mention selection after finishing the season with 288 kills, the second most on the squad. The 6'4" outside hitter also produced the third-most points (344.5) and blocks (94) on the Sun Devils team.
Â
The Salt Lake City, Utah, native played in all 32 of ASU's matches last season, notching a season-high 18 kills against top-ranked USC. Thanks to her strong play, Arizona State opened the season with a perfect 15-0 mark, the best start in ASU's history, resulting in the program's highest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) ranking at No. 5.
Â
Following the 2015 season, Bailey was selected to the Pac-12 All-Star Team, which traveled to China earlier this summer.
Â
"There are very few athletes I've come across in my time who are as comfortable being uncomfortable as she is," Hampton-Keith added. "Bree's willingness to try new things, to give whatever the team needs and to be an exceptional leader is a greater testament to who she is as a person. I feel privileged to be able to coach her again."
Â
As a freshman with the Sun Devils, she garnered Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honors after swatting 342 kills, highlighted by 235 against conference foes. Bailey tallied a career high with 24 kills against the Utah Utes on Nov. 17 that year. She was an All-Tournament selection at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational in her rookie campaign following a 16-kill performance with a .636 attacking percentage.
Â
Bailey is also a standout student, as a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention honoree in 2015 and 2014, securing Dean's List honors in each of those years.
Â
BreElle will have the pleasure of playing her final season of volleyball on the court where her father Thurl starred during the 80s, Reynolds Coliseum.
