Brown’s Career-High Leads NC State Volleyball Past Syracuse, 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. - In front of a record crowd of 5,500 fans, NC State volleyball's Julia Brown tallied a career-best 31 kills to lead the Wolfpack to a 3-2 (18-25, 25-21, 25-19, 24-26, 15-12) victory against the Syracuse Orange Friday night inside Reynolds Coliseum. The match was held prior to basketball's Primetime with the Pack event.
The Wolfpack improves to 12-9 and 5-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while the Orange fall to 5-14 and 4-5 in league action.
Worth Noting
- Brown's 31 kills are the most by any player in the ACC this season and ranks among the top 15 in the NCAA for most in a match this year.
- NC State earned its fifth ACC victory in the contest, matching its total from a season ago with 11 conference matches remaining.
- The Wolfpack's win secured the season sweep against Syracuse, as the teams met in September with NC State defeating the Orange, 3-0.
- NC State now leads the all-time series, 8-2, highlighted by a 4-1 mark as ACC opponents.

Match Rewind
- Syracuse started fast in the contest, as the Orange raced out to a 9-5 lead en route to a 25-18 first-set win.
- NC State countered with a 25-21 win in the second set to even the score at one set apiece in the overall match.
- Brown played a large role in the frame, as she smacked 11 kills in the set, the most by any player on the Wolfpack this season in a single set.
- The Wolfpack used an 8-2 run to grab a 16-13 advantage, forcing the Orange to take a timeout. Out of the break, NCSU continued to excel and a service error by the 'Cuse gave the Pack the win in the set.
- The third set was evenly-contested, although Syracuse never led in the set there were 10 ties.
- With the score knotted at 17, NC State scored six unanswered points to grab a 23-17 lead, forcing Syracuse to burn both of its timeouts in the process.
- The third frame ended in the same manner as the second set, a service error by Syracuse, to give the Wolfpack a 25-19 win and 2-1 lead in the match.
- NC State played a great fourth set, but was edged down the stretch. Syracuse went on a 5-0 run to grab a 23-20 lead, but the Pack battled back to knot the score at 24.
- After fighting off Syracuse's first set point attempt, NC State was unsuccessful a second time as the Orange won it, 26-24, to force a decisive fifth set.
- Brown opened the fifth set on a positive note for the Wolfpack with a kill and Erin Chatman smacked a kill later in the set to give NC State a 10-7 lead, resulting in a 'Cuse timeout.
- With the score level at 12, NC State close out the match with three consecutive points capped by a solo block by Perry Ramsey to secure the 15-12 fifth-set win and 3-2 win in the match.
Top Performers
- Brown career high led all players in kills and she also pitched in defensively with 16 digs to record her second consecutive double-double and 11th of the season.
- Junior Kaitlyn Kearney turned in a stellar performance putting down 14 kills to go along with a .344 attacking percentage.
- Ramsey also notched double-digit kills in the match with 13 and contributed 12 digs for her first double-double of 2016.
- At setter, Maggie Speaks dished out 63 assists, just one shy of her career best, in addition to 17 digs and two kills. It was her eighth double-double.
- Defensively, senior Rachel Eppley charted a match-high 21 digs, while freshman Grace Irvin collected 14.
