Wolfpack earns highest ranking since 1982
MURRAY, Ky. – Following a record-breaking performance at the program's first home match in nearly a decade, the NC State rifle team has jumped five spots in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) polls to No. 8, as announced by the organization.
Â
It is the Wolfpack's highest ranking in the polls since 1982 when the squad advanced to the NCAA Championships with an identical listing. Last week, the Pack was ranked No. 13 but the strong performance at home against top-ranked West Virginia lifted the squad to a top-10 listing.
Â
The ranking is significant because the top eight programs advance to the NCAA Championships.
Â
The Wolfpack broke program records in air rifle and total team score on Saturday inside Reynolds Coliseum. NC State finished with a team score of 4671, while West Virginia posted the top score with a 4709 clip.
Â
NC State's team score bested the previous school record of 4665, set last season against No. 3 Kentucky on Jan. 17, by five. In the air rifle competition, the Wolfpack set a program best 2366, eclipsing the previous mark of 2360 fired at the 2016 Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships.
Â
Individually, graduate student Lauren Phillips recorded a personal best 595 to lead the Wolfpack in the competition. It was her first time competing in an NC State suit, after transferring from Nebraska.
Â
NC State returns to action Saturday, Oct. 22, when it travels for Akron, Ohio, to take on the host Akron Zips as well as West Virginia.
