RALEIGH, N.C. - Senior Max Rohskopf will kick off the 2016-17 NC State wrestling season for the Wolfpack, as he will be competing in the NWCA All-Star Classic for the second year in a row.
The NWCA All-Star Classic features two of the top wrestlers at every weight class competing in an exhibition match. This year the event will be held in Cleveland, Ohio - 85 miles from Rohskopf's hometown of Killbuck - on Nov. 5.
To start the 2016-17 season, Rohskopf sits at No. 6 nationally at 157 pounds in the FloWrestling preseason poll, and is ranked No. 9 according to TheOpenMat.com.
"I look forward to representing the Wolfpack at the All-Star Classic again this year," said Rohskopf. "It's a great event that the NWCA puts on to start our season.
"I'm eager to step out there and put on a show at my new weight for my hometown crowd in 'Believeland' Northeast Ohio."
Last year, Rohskopf scored a 9-2 win at 165 pounds over Oklahoma's Clark Glass. After a scoreless first period, Rohskopf started the second period on top and scored a four-point near-fall to take a 4-1 lead into the third. After his escape, Rohskopf scored a takedown (three points using experiemental rules) and secured the extra ride-time point and came away with a 9-2 win.
Moving down to 157 pounds for his final season, Rohskopf will face senior Brian Murphy of Michigan - A 2015 All-American and three-time NCAA qualifier.
Rohskopf was the 2016 ACC Champion at 165 pounds last year, earning an NCAA automatic bid. He recevied the No. 5 seed at the NCAAs, and went 1-2. He finished the season 16-4 overall, including 13-2 in duals. He also went 7-2 against ranked foes, including a stretch of five straight matches all wins over ranked opponents, and was a perfect 4-0 in ACC duals, with three of those wins over raked foes. Rohskopf finished the season ranked #9 nationally at 165 pounds by FloWrestling.com.
For the third straight season, NC State has a wrestler competing in the Main Event matches. In addiiton to Rohskopf's win last year, Nick Gwiazdowski also wrestled in 2014 at heavyweight.
Rohskopf's match is an exhibition, and will not count towards his season record.
The event will be aired live on ESPNU. For more information on the NWCA All-Star Classic, visit www.theallstarclassic.com.
