NC State played three intrasquad scrimmages over the weekend
NC State baseball battled through three full-length intrasquads this weekend as fall practice continues. Capsules on each game and comments from head coach Elliott Avent below.Â
GAME 1
Friday night's series opener saw Team Pack pull away for a 10-3 win. Tommy DeJuneas factored on both sides with six strikeouts to one walk from the mound, a stolen base and a single at the plate. Freshman catcher Brad Debo homered, singled, and walked to contribute four RBIs. Jack Conley and Shane Shepard each supplied a solo homer. New pitchers Mathieu Gauthier, James Ferguson, Dalton Feeney, and James Vaughan combined for 14 Ks.
GAME 2
Saturday featured a 4-3 pitcher's duel between starters Cody Beckman and Sean Adler. Beckman finished with five strikeouts, but Adler looked perhaps the sharpest of any pitcher on the roster, fanning a pair over five innings of one-hit ball. Jack Conley and Steven Oakley drove in the first two runs of the game, and each team scored twice in their bases-loaded/no-out inning to make it 3-3 heading for extras. In the bottom 10th, E.P. Reese drove a sac fly deep enough to right to plate the game-winner from third.Â
GAME 3
Team Wolf collected its first win of the weekend in a back-and-forth 11-10 thriller. Oakley submitted four RBIs on two singles. Brett Kinneman singled three times with two RBIs, a run and a stolen base. Shepard bunted for a single in his first at-bat against the shift, before providing a single and a double, two runs, and an RBI the rest of the way. Evan Mendoza tripled and scored once on a single. Brady Gulakowski and Lawson McArthur added RBI singles. Conley and Steven Pitarra homered in the eighth, Pitarra's a two-run bomb to swing the lead back in his squad's favor.Â
HEAD COACH ELLIOTT AVENT on Fall World Series
"For us to make two teams, and have enough good players out there, it shows how much depth we have on this team both pitching and position players. That's encouraging for the future of the program.Â
To play with this kind of emotion and energy while playing your buddies on the other side, really trying to go after them because you want to win? I thought it was three of the best days we've ever had here at NC State in the fall. I couldn't be more pleased or proud of the guys we've got here.
Everyday is a measuring stick for coaches. There's not a practice that goes by where you don't take mental notice of what's going on. This was a little different environment. It's a series where they're getting after it a little bit. So you get to see them in a game environment. Some guys are different in practice. When the game starts we're looking for who accelerates, who stays the same, and making sure no one regresses. We'll get more chances to watch that on scout day and during scrimmages this week."
THIS WEEK
The Wolfpack returns to action Wednesday at 4 PM for a scrimmage against Academy Baseball Canada. This weekend, Elon and Campbell come to visit. Details on start times and dates for those scrimmages will be updated later in the week.
