RALEIGH – The NC State men's basketball team fell short in a late comeback attempt on Wednesday night, dropping an 85-78 contest to Florida State. The Wolfpack trailed by double digits with 1:02 to go, but had a chance to tie the game late while trailing 79-76.
Key Stats: Abdul-Malik Abu posted another double-double in a career night with 21 points, 13 rebounds and a career high six assists. Abu now has seven double-doubles this season with five coming in his last seven games.
Anthony 'Cat' Barber chipped in 16 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Maverick Rowan scored a team-high 22 points. Rowan hit a pair of 3-pointers during NC State's comeback and nearly tied the game with a trey from the left wing with 37 seconds left to play. His game-tying '3' rattled around the rim before bouncing out.
Turning Point: Trailing by 10 points with 1:02 to go, the Pack scored eight points in 25 seconds to pull with a single possession. During the run, Abu threw down a one-handed slam and Rowan drilled 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. NC State missed a pair of 3-points, and Florida State hit its next four free throws to pull away from the Pack and escape with a win.
Never Give Up: During a media timeout in the first half, The V Foundation donated $1.6 million to the NC State Cancer Therapeutics Training Program. Jim Valvano's daughter, Jamie, and Associate AD Dereck Whittenburg presented the check to program leader Dr. John Cavanaugh.
Gott Said It: "We had a tough night. I certainly feel that we could have played better. I look at the game a lot of different ways. On one hand, 78 (points) should be good enough to win. We had a couple guys really struggle from the field, so 78 could have been a lot more than 78. On defense we got real spread out and they made a couple of threes. The way they were running their ball screens made us worry about their length, which left people open. They made every shot they needed to make and made the big shots. You have to give them credit for that. Malik was terrific, he played extremely hard and rebounded well. He played with a competitive spirit. Our team needs to get better and we can get better. It's certainly frustrating because we haven't played our best basketball for 40 minutes yet in the ACC. We show it in spurts and you'll see little glimpses, but its not there a 40-minute period. We have to figure out how to do that."
Up Next: On Saturday, NC State heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a matchup with No. 5 UNC-CH. The game is set to tip off at 12 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN.
