CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Abdul-Malik Abu recorded his seventh double-double in nine games but a slow second half saw the NC State men's basketball team fall 67-55 at the Smith Center on Saturday.
Abu scored 12 points and tied his career high of 14 rebounds. Maverick Rowan chipped in 10 points and Cody Martin, who made his fourth career start and gave UNC-CH star guard Marcus Paige fits, totaled 10 points and seven rebounds. The fifth-ranked Tar Heels got 23 points from Kennedy Meeks and 14 from Joel Berry II.
Even First Half: The Wolfpack set the tone early, making the game a battle and taking away the easy transition game the Tar Heels favor. NC State on multiple occasions had a five-point lead and led for most of the first half. With the home team leading 27-26, Barber drilled a 3-pointer to give the Pack the lead. Meeks scored a bucket late in the half to make the halftime score 29-29 at intermission. NC State held UNC Chapel Hill to .344 shooting during the game's first 20 minutes.
Second Half Run: The home team took control of the game with a 14-2 run that was spurred by eight points by Meeks. NC State led 34-31 before Meeks asserted himself, and with 13:27 left the Pack trailed 45-36. The Wolfpack wouldn't get closer than seven points the rest of the afternoon.
Pack Limited UNC-CH's Stars: The top two scorers this season for the Tar Heels are Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson, who the Pack held in check for most of the day. Paige, being hounded defensively by the Martin twins, was forced into a 1-for-9 shooting day. Johnson managed six points on 3-for-6 shooting.
Gott Said It: "First of all we're disappointed, but at the same time I'm really proud. I thought our kids gave a great effort. I thought there were some things in the second half that changed the game. Number one was their ability to get offensive rebounds I thought hurt us, and our turnovers. I probably think those two things probably magnified the difference of them having a better second half than we did. They went inside, if they didn't score it they shot it, went and got it off the rim. So that was probably the difference of the game. At the same time, like I said, there's a lot of reasons for us not to come in here and play hard. You know, we've lost some games. Guys can be down. North Carolina is really, really good. This is a really good basketball team this year that Roy [Williams] has. They're deep. They can score; they're averaging 88 points a game. And our guys, in the first half, wow they were terrific. We're sitting there 29-all, and the second half, like I said, probably their depth maybe wore us down a little bit. But their ability to get a second-shot basket and our inability to execute our offense very well and turn it over, those two things hurt us more than anything. So we're disappointed, but I'm really proud and we're gonna keep swinging. We're gonna get better and we're going to find a way. "
