RALEIGH, N.C.- GoPack.com recently had a chance to catch up with the two newest additions of the NC State gymnastics team, Caitlyn Fillard and Maggie Tamburro.
Prior to joining the program in August, Fillard finished 13th in the all-around competition and 10th on vault at the 2015 Junior Olympic Nationals, and finished fourth on vault, eighth in the all-around competition and 10th on floor at the 2013 Level 10 JO Nationals.
Tamburro was a Junior Olympic national qualifier in 2013 and 2014, as well as a State Champion on vault in 2014 and Regional Vault Champion in 2013. Additionally, she was valedictorian of her class at Lower Dauphin High School.
Caitlyn Fillard
Out of Centereach, N.Y., Caitlyn Fillard has not only joined the NC State gymnastics team, but is once again training and competing with her sister, Amanda. Along with having her sister as a teammate, Fillard also mentioned that the coaching staff and campus were also huge factors as to why she chose NC State.
Gymnastics has always been an important part of her life considering both of her sisters, Megan and Amanda, have both been involved with gymnastics for several years and her mother worked at a gym. Outside of gymnastics, Fillard enjoys hanging out with friends, going to the beach and spending time with her family.
This friendly, outgoing student-athlete enjoys listening to hip-hop music and loves to eat mashed potatoes.
Maggie Tamburro
Hailing from Hershey, Pa., Maggie Tamburro felt that NC State provided the best combination of a strong engineering and gymnastics program. In addition to the strong athletics program and outstanding academics, she says that the beautiful weather and campus also helped influence her decision.
Tamburro has been a gymnast for 15 years and says that her greatest accomplishment was earning a gymnastics scholarship to NC State. In preparation for her first year, she is considering earning a degree in biomedical or chemical engineering.
In Tamburro's spare time she enjoys satisfying her sweet tooth by baking, especially cookies and other desserts. Outside of academics, the free-spirited Tamburro is secretly an expert in forestry and enjoys listening to pop artist Kesha and country music. She notes that her favorite song is 'Cup of Tea' by Kacey Musgraves.
