Clyburn Tied For Second After 36 Holes In Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman India Clyburn shot 5-under for 36 holes and is tied for second overall after 36 holes of the Mercedes Women's Collegiate in Knoxville, Tenn. The NC State women's golf team stands sixth among 14 teams heading into Tuesday's final round at Cherokee Country Club, hosted by the University of Tennessee.
Clyburn, playing in her second collegiate tournament, shot a 3-under 68 in the first round on Monday morning, and continued with a card of 69 in the second round. She totaled eight birdies on the day, including a stretch of three in a row during the first round.
"The rounds went fast," Clyburn said. "I was able to keep momentum going throughout the day."
Clyburn is tied with Florida's Samantha Wagner for second place, trailing leader Taylor Kim of Kent State by just one shot. As a team, the Pack is just seven shots behind Ohio State for fourth place. Kent State is leading the team standings heading into the final day.
"Our team played hard and stayed the course. I'm really excited about the year ahead," head coach Page Marsh said. "They love the game, respect it and work hard. I appreciate they're always giving their best."
Naomi Ko and Cecily Overbey (+6) are both tied for 37th in the 78-player field. Leonie Bettel (+7) is tied for 47th and Rachael Taylor (+8) stands tied for 51st. Playing as an individual, Sarah Bae (+5) carded a 72 in the first round and is tied for 28th.
The third and final round of the tournament will be Tuesday. The Wolfpack will be teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
