FINAL COUGAR CLASSIC RESULTS
HANRAHAN, S.C. - The NC State women's golf team jumped three spots in the standings in the final round to place seventh at the Cougar Classic at Yeaman's Hall Club. Tuesday's round concluded the first tournament of the 2015-16 year.
Four players in NC State's lineup were making their Wolfpack debut, including three freshmen and a transfer. Newcomer Leonie Bettel (+5) led the Wolfpack and tied for 24th in the 107-player event. Bettel was followed by another freshman, Naomi Ko (+6), who shot an even-par 72 in the final round. Cecily Overbey (+9), Sarah Bae (+13) and India Clyburn (+13) rounded out the scoring for NC State, which entered Tuesday's round in 10th place.
"I am really proud of their heart and fight. We are a young team and they showed their passion for the game and mental toughness because the course setup was was difficult," head coach Page Marsh said. "The hole locations and green speed were tough. We had our ups and downs but stayed the course."
The three freshmen in the lineup seconded Marsh's thoughts that the conditions at the course near Charleston, S.C., were difficult.
"The course was playing tough today," Ko said. "The greens were faster and the pins were tough. The wind was swirling. We hit some good shots and putts considering the conditions."
Bettel and Clyburn added: "We played hard today and just tried to stay patient."
One individual highlight came on the par-5 18th hole, where Overbey fired a double eagle. Bettel, Bae and Overbey were among the tournament's top 11 players in par-5 scoring.
NC State returns to action Sept. 20-22 at the Mercedes Women's Collegiate in Knoxville, Tenn.
